We caught up with Matthew Benjamin, from architecture and design practice P Joseph, to learn more about his background and inspiration.
Were you always interested in design?
My mum is an excellent architect and my father is a great tinkerer; a very practical, handy guy who is always making things for his boat, so it is in my blood.
What inspires you today?
My favourite novel that I'm reading again, Journey by Moonlight, by Antal Szerb.
Where do you like to hang out in your spare time when you’re switching off and relaxing?
Occasionally I like to go to the bar at Duke's Hotel in St. James for a Friday night drink. Very elegant white-jacketed waiters push around an ancient drinks trolley, and pour Martinis from frozen bottles. Sitting outside at Ciao Bella on Lambs Conduit St with friends is the ultimate. Riding to work on my new bike is also very relaxing.
Do you have any rules?
Look at everything.
Who are your favourite designers currently working in the industry?
I love Eric Schmitt's work. Raf Simons's work for Kvadrat landed like a meteor, it will be incredibly interesting to see the range grow.
What exciting new projects do you have on the horizon?
P Joseph is starting on some very exciting residential projects this year, of quite different scales and styles, which everyone here is so excited to begin.
